Construction All our work is held together by screwed joinery, not staples or nails. (see illustration on our joinery page) Even backs are screwed on. Shelves fit into dadoes (grooves) in the sides. Each side, shelf, and edge is selected for quality and appearance. We use no particle board, only wood. |

Cherry, oak, and maple pieces are made from fine sanded, 3/4" thick all wood veneer plywood, with 1/2" thick solid edge banding. Face frames are solid hardwoods, hand-glued and clamped. Pine bookcases are made of Western Ponderosa Pine, not less expensive Eastern White Pine. All our work is available finished or unfinished. We finish by hand, not spray, rubbing the finish up to 600x grit with Danish Oil/Wax ("Natural Finish") or a variety of oil stains or wax. The difference between our finishing and others is easy to feel - just run your hand over any of our shelves. Maintenance is simple: orange or lemon oil whenever the case looks dry. Bookcase Depths /Backward Lean Our standard bookcase is 9 - 9 1/4" deep (depending on material), This is deep enough for regular books, encyclopedias/textbooks, and many art books. We also have standard 11-12" deep and 7-8" deep, fine for all regular books if saving space is necessary. Any depth is available for custom orders. All our freestanding cases are cut at a small angle on the bottom so they will lean back toward a wall. |
